Run for those who can’t
A spinal cord injury (SCI) is a life-changing neurological condition, although fortunately relatively rare. The main causes are traumatic, including road traffic accidents, falls, and sports injuries. Depending on the level of injury, SCI can lead to loss of function in the lower body (typically from thoracic or lumbar injuries) or impairment of both arms and legs (from cervical injuries). Beyond mobility, SCI also comes with many other physical challenges that require long-term care and adaptation.
While there has been significant progress in understanding SCI, no definitive cure currently exists. Rehabilitation strategies can greatly improve independence and quality of life, while medical follow-up helps to prevent and manage complications.
Much of the research on SCI is made possible thanks to foundations such as Wings for Life, a non-profit organization dedicated to funding cutting-edge research projects worldwide, with the goal of finding a cure for spinal cord injuries.
One of its flagship initiatives is the Wings for Life World Run, a unique global running event held annually, typically in May. Participants around the world start simultaneously and are chased by a virtual or real “Catcher Car,” which replaces the traditional finish line. The race ends for each participant when the Catcher Car passes them. All entry fees and donations go directly to spinal cord research, making it both a mass participation event and a major fundraising platform.
The next organized event in Switzerland will take place in Zug on May 10, 2026, at 13:00. Although the main event is already sold out, it is still possible to participate from anywhere via the mobile application.
The motto of the Run is: “Run for those who can’t.” If you would like to support research on SCI, we warmly encourage you to join the run and/or support Wings for Life foundation.
