Special Proton - Towards a lasting social protection

For decades, Proton, the Staff Association's publication, has accompanied CERN at key moments in its history. In December 2022, we addressed a subject that concerns us all: the future of the Organization. Today, we return to this important subject from a different angle.

The future of CERN and that of its personnel are intimately linked. Offering an attractive and on ensuring a lasting social protection system (which provides benefits until the death of the last beneficiary) is a key factor in the attractiveness of any intergovernmental organization, including CERN.

The Staff Association is proposing two lines of reflection. To find out more, read the Proton!

Long-Term Collections

This activity began in the early seventies, shortly after the “Bern Declaration”, on the initiative of a few staff members.

This small committee works discretely, but with determination, to bring aid to the developing countries. More than 74 projects have been supported over the last 45 years.

The Long Term Collections are financed by CERN staff donations and an annual contribution from the Staff Association.

GAC-EPA

The primary aim of the GAC-EPA is to allow retired staff members to stay in touch with the CERN.

The Group shall have the aim of bringing together the beneficiaries of the Pension Fundand providing them with information on questions relating to their situation. It shall also aim to allow collective representation of pensioners to the Staff Associationsand the Administrations of the Organizations in all the areas which concern them, and thus to assure the best possible protection of their collective interests.

The Group shall also, according to the means available, provide its members with assistance in their personal initiatives and a framework for their activities as members of the Pension Fund.

“Permanences" for the use of its members wishing to have one of their problems studied by the GAC-EPA are organised on a regular basis.
